About SeaWorld San Diego
SeaWorld San Diego is the original SeaWorld — opened 1964 on Mission Bay, about 8 miles and 15 minutes northwest of downtown. It's a hybrid marine park + theme park: orca presentations and the Aquaria touch-pools alongside three of the biggest coasters in the city (Emperor, Electric Eel, and Manta). The 320-ft Skytower rotating overlook gives a clean view across Mission Bay, the Pacific, and Point Loma. A 12–15 passenger van is the right tool — the main parking lot is a flat surface lot that fits every van, and the park is small enough that a family group can move together without splitting up.
Why it's worth the drive
- Emperor (2022) — the West Coast's tallest, fastest, and longest dive coaster (153 ft, 60° drop).
- Orca Encounter — the park's flagship presentation, redesigned around natural orca behavior (not the old 'Shamu' show).
- Penguin Encounter — climate-controlled walk-through housing 300+ penguins of five species, the largest collection in the country.
- Sesame Place San Diego — the rebrand of the old Bay of Play area, now a full Sesame Street kids land with Big Bird and Elmo meet-and-greets.
Things to do
What groups actually do at SeaWorld
Emperor dive coaster
Get on it first thing — Emperor's line doubles by 11 AM. Floorless seats, the 153-ft drop, three inversions.
Orca Encounter
Don't miss the show — it's the park's signature, and the front rows DO get wet despite the 'No Soak Zone' rebrand.
Electric Eel + Manta
Electric Eel is a triple-launch coaster (the tallest in San Diego). Manta is the family launch coaster with a stingray dark-ride preshow.
Skytower
320-ft rotating tower with the best aerial view of Mission Bay and the Pacific — included with admission.
Aquaria touch pools
Hands-on bat ray, leopard shark, and tide pool stations near the front of the park.
Sesame Place San Diego
Full Sesame Street kids land — character parade, family rides, splash zone for ages 2–8.
Group + van tips
Driving a 12-15 passenger van to SeaWorld
- SeaWorld's main parking lot is a flat surface lot that accepts every van size — no clearance issues for a 15-passenger Sprinter.
- Preferred parking ($35) and the 'Premium' rows are closer to the entrance — worth it on summer weekends.
- If you're only going for the evening fireworks (summer), parking is the same price all day — arrive at 5 PM to do the night rides + show.
- Mission Bay traffic backs up on summer weekends on Sea World Dr — leave by 4 PM if you don't want to sit in it.
SeaWorld's main lot is free-of-clearance and accepts every van size. RV / oversize parking is at the south end of the lot.
When to go
