About Balboa Park
Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in North America — 1,200 acres just north of downtown San Diego, anchored by the spectacular Spanish Colonial Revival buildings built for the 1915 Panama–California Exposition. It holds 17 museums, the San Diego Zoo, the Old Globe Theatre, the Spreckels Organ Pavilion (the world's largest outdoor pipe organ), and the Botanical Building. From downtown it's only 2 miles / 8 minutes; from the airport about 6 miles. A 12–15 passenger van fits easily in any of the multiple free surface lots — Inspiration Point, Federal Building, Organ Pavilion, and Pan-American Plaza. Most museums offer a Multi-Day Explorer Pass that pays for itself after three.
Why it's worth the drive
- 17 museums on a single walkable promenade (El Prado) — art, air & space, natural history, science, photography, and more.
- Free attractions: the Botanical Building & Lily Pond, Spreckels Organ Pavilion concerts (Sundays 2 PM), the architecture itself, and Tuesday museum-free days on a rotating schedule.
- Old Globe Theatre — Tony-winning regional theatre with a year-round Shakespeare program in summer.
- Spanish Village Art Center — 37 working artist studios open daily, free to walk through.

Group + van tips
Driving a 12-15 passenger van to Balboa Park
- Inspiration Point lot (Park Blvd at Presidents Way) is the largest free lot — accepts any van size, free Park-wide tram service from here on weekends + holidays.
- The Federal Building lot, Organ Pavilion lot, and Pan-American Plaza lot all fit 15-passenger Sprinters and Transits.
- Free Balboa Park tram runs Mon–Fri 11 AM – 6 PM (and longer hours weekends) from Inspiration Point to the museums — useful with kids or in summer heat.
- Old Globe Theatre evening shows: park at the Old Globe Way / Plaza de Panama area; arrive 45 minutes early in summer.
Balboa Park parking is free everywhere. Inspiration Point + tram is the smoothest option for a 15-passenger van.
When to go
Best time to visit
March–May (cherry blossoms in the Japanese Garden in March) and September–November have the best weather. December First Friday and 'December Nights' (first Friday and Saturday of December) draws 350,000+ with free museum admission 5 PM – 9 PM — beautiful but extremely busy. Mornings are cool and lightly trafficked year-round.
