About Palm Springs
Palm Springs is a desert resort city in the Coachella Valley, about 140 miles and 2.5 hours northeast of San Diego (I-15 → I-215 → I-10). It's the home of mid-century desert modernism architecture, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway up Mt. San Jacinto (the world's largest rotating tram car), and the long-running Modernism Week each February. A 12–15 passenger van handles the long valley between downtown Palm Springs, Palm Desert (El Paseo shopping), Indian Wells (tennis), La Quinta (Old Town), and the date farms around Indio. From San Diego it's a long-day trip — most groups make it an overnight or weekend.
Why it's worth the drive
- Palm Springs Aerial Tramway — world's largest rotating tram car, climbs 5,873 vertical feet up Mt. San Jacinto in about 10 minutes. 30–40°F cooler at the top.
- Desert modernism architecture — Kaufmann House (Neutra), Frank Sinatra's Twin Palms estate, Elrod House, and the Frey House II.
- Joshua Tree National Park is 40 miles east — keep it in mind as a half-day pairing.
- Modernism Week (mid-February) — the country's largest architecture festival, double-decker bus tours, home tours, and the Modernism Show.

Group + van tips
Driving a 12-15 passenger van to Palm Springs
- From San Diego: leave by 7 AM to clear I-15 / I-215 / I-10 — by midmorning the I-10 east of Beaumont gets ugly on weekends.
- Aerial Tramway has a large flat parking lot — every van fits. The lot fills weekends between 10 AM and 2 PM; ride first car or late afternoon.
- Downtown Palm Springs (Palm Canyon Dr) has a city parking garage at La Plaza — accepts standard Sprinters and Transits.
- Summer (mid-June – mid-September): triple-digit heat is real. Plan hiking only at sunrise; spend midday at a pool or the Tramway (cool at the top).
- Coachella + Stagecoach weekends (mid-April): the whole valley books up months ahead — avoid these weekends unless you have rooms.
Aerial Tramway, downtown, and the museums all accept 15-passenger Sprinters in flat lots. No clearance issues anywhere in the valley.
