About San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo sits at the north end of Balboa Park, about 3 miles and 10 minutes from downtown San Diego. Opened in 1916, it pioneered the cage-free, moated open-enclosure exhibit style that nearly every modern zoo now uses. 3,500+ animals across 100 acres of canyons, plus the returned giant pandas (Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, arrived 2024 — the first giant pandas in the U.S. since 2019). A 12–15 passenger van is the easiest way to do the Zoo because the parking lot is free, flat, and accepts every van size — and the hilly back canyons are best covered by the included Guided Bus Tour, not by walking the whole loop with kids.

Why it's worth the drive

Things to do

What groups actually do at SD Zoo

Giant Panda viewing

Walk in early — the panda exhibit queue forms by 9:30 AM most days. Yun Chuan and Xin Bao are most active in the morning before naps.

Guided Bus Tour

Included free with admission, departs from inside the entrance — 35 minutes, covers about 75% of the zoo.

Skyfari aerial tram

One-way trip across the zoo — great way to skip the climb back from the canyon exhibits.

Africa Rocks

Eight habitats in one section — penguins, baboons, leopards, lemurs. The largest project in zoo history.

Tiger Trail / Lost Forest

Sumatran tigers in a dense rainforest enclosure — walk-through with multiple viewing windows.

Children's Zoo + Petting Paddock

Refurbished kids' area with goats, naked mole rats, and the wildlife playground.

Group + van tips

Driving a 12-15 passenger van to SD Zoo

  • Zoo parking is free in a flat surface lot — every van size fits, including 15-passenger Sprinters and Ford Transits.
  • Arrive before 9 AM in summer — the lot fills by 10:30 on peak days, and pandas are easier to see early.
  • There is a separate, smaller lot at the back of the zoo (off Park Blvd at Florida Dr) — use it if the main lot is full.
  • Strollers and wagons can be rented on-site; bring shade and water — the canyons get hot midday June–September.

San Diego Zoo's main lot is free, flat, and accepts every van size including 15-passenger Sprinters.

When to go

Best time to visit

March–May and September–November have the best weather and the lightest crowds. Summer is busiest — arrive at 9 AM or after 3 PM (open until 8 PM in summer with extended hours). Pandas are most active in the morning and late afternoon. Avoid Easter, Memorial Day, and Labor Day weekends.

Need a van for the trip?

Our San Diego fleet of 12-15 passenger Sprinters and Ford Transits delivers to San Diego International (SAN), Gaslamp, Mission Bay, and Coronado hotel doors.

SD Zoo FAQ

Are the pandas at the San Diego Zoo a separate ticket?

No — viewing the giant pandas is included with standard admission. Lines are longest 10 AM – 2 PM; go right at open or in the last hour for the shortest waits.

Is parking free at the San Diego Zoo?

Yes — parking is free in a flat surface lot that accepts every van size. There's a secondary lot off Park Blvd at Florida Dr if the main lot fills.

Is the Guided Bus Tour included with admission?

Yes — the 35-minute Guided Bus Tour is included free with any admission ticket. Lines form near the entrance; ride first thing in the morning before the queue builds.

San Diego Zoo or the Safari Park?

The Zoo (Balboa Park) is more compact, has the pandas, and is the classic. The Safari Park (Escondido, ~35 mi north) is open-range African / Asian habitats with caravan safaris — both are owned by the same nonprofit and admission can be combined.
