About Grand Canyon West

Grand Canyon West sits on the Hualapai Tribal Reservation at the far western end of the Grand Canyon — about 125 miles and 2.5 hours from the Strip, the closest Grand Canyon experience to Las Vegas. (Grand Canyon National Park's South Rim is 280 miles / 4.5 hours away, an entirely different destination.) The big draw is the Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped glass-bottomed cantilever bridge that extends 70 ft out over a 4,000-ft drop into the canyon, opened in 2007. The full visit also includes Eagle Point (Skywalk), Guano Point (panoramic), and Hualapai Ranch (Old West town) — a hop-on/hop-off shuttle bus connects them. A 12–15 passenger van is the right tool; bus tours from the Strip are crowded and time-restricted.

Why it's worth the drive

Things to do

What groups actually do at Grand Canyon West

Skywalk

Walk the horseshoe glass cantilever, 70 ft out over 4,000 ft of vertical canyon. NO cameras or phones allowed on the bridge — pro photos sold at the gift shop.

Eagle Point overlook

Named for the eagle-shape natural rock formation across the canyon — the Skywalk is built here, plus the Native American Village reproduction.

Guano Point

Panoramic 270° overlook on a narrow ridge — the most photogenic free viewpoint at Grand Canyon West, plus the ruins of an old guano-mining tram.

Hualapai Ranch

Old West town reproduction — wagon rides, gunfight shows, and overnight cabin stays. The hop-on/hop-off shuttle's third major stop.

Helicopter to the canyon floor (Papillon)

10–15 min ride down to the Colorado River — popular add-on, book before you arrive; weight limits are strict.

Colorado River pontoon (Hualapai River Runners)

Smooth-water raft on the Colorado at the canyon bottom — combined with the helicopter for a half-day. Seasonal.

Group + van tips

Driving a 12-15 passenger van to Grand Canyon West

  • Last 14 miles (Pierce Ferry Rd → Diamond Bar Rd) is now fully paved (since 2014) — fine for a 15-passenger Sprinter, but rough patches remain. Drive slowly past mile 5.
  • No food or fuel between Dolan Springs and the West Rim — fill up at the Chevron in Dolan Springs on US-93.
  • Cell service is non-existent on Diamond Bar Rd — download offline Google Maps and confirm your tickets before leaving Vegas.
  • Admission is by 'package' (Legacy Bronze, Silver, Gold) sold per person, includes the shuttle between the three viewpoints. Skywalk is an upcharge on top.
  • Plan 6–7 hours round trip from the Strip minimum (2.5 hr each way + 2–3 hr at the rim).

Grand Canyon West has a large flat lot — every van size fits. You park once and use the included hop-on/hop-off shuttle.

When to go

Best time to visit

March–May and September–November have the best weather. Summer at the West Rim hits 100°F+ with no shade. Winter mornings can be below freezing but daytime is usually pleasant. The Skywalk is open year-round, generally 8 AM – 5 PM (winter) or 7 AM – 7 PM (summer). Book Skywalk + a helicopter or river add-on weeks ahead in peak season.
