About San Diego
San Diego sits about 90 miles south of central Orange County — roughly 1 hour 40 minutes down I-5 with no traffic, longer through the inevitable Camp Pendleton slowdowns. It's the southernmost major U.S. city, anchored by Balboa Park (the largest urban cultural park in North America), the San Diego Zoo, a working Navy waterfront with the USS Midway museum, Gaslamp Quarter dining, and a 70-mile beach run from Oceanside to Imperial Beach. A 12–15 passenger van is the right tool for the day — Balboa Park, the Zoo, La Jolla, and Coronado are all 10–20 minutes apart but rideshares between them add up fast for a group.
Why it's worth the drive
- Balboa Park — 1,200 acres, 17 museums, the original 1915 Panama–California Exposition buildings, and the San Diego Zoo on the north edge.
- San Diego Zoo — pioneered open-enclosure exhibits; the only U.S. zoo with breeding pandas (giant pandas returned in 2024).
- USS Midway Museum — the longest-serving Navy aircraft carrier of the 20th century, now a floating museum on the downtown waterfront.
- La Jolla Cove — sea lions, kayak caves, and snorkeling in a protected marine reserve 20 minutes north of downtown.
- Coronado + Hotel del Coronado — the 1888 wooden Victorian beach hotel across the bay, reached via the Coronado Bridge.
Things to do
What groups actually do at San Diego
San Diego Zoo
Allow a full day — the bus tour is included with admission and is the fastest way to cover the hilly back canyons. Giant pandas returned in 2024.
Balboa Park museums
San Diego Museum of Art, Air & Space, Natural History, Fleet Science, and the Mingei — most cluster along El Prado, walkable from one parking lot.
USS Midway Museum
30+ restored aircraft on the flight deck, included audio tour through the engine room, hangar bay, and bridge — easy 3 hours.
La Jolla Cove + Children's Pool
Sea lions at the Cove, harbor seals at the Children's Pool — both are protected marine reserves, viewing only, do not approach the wildlife.
Hotel del Coronado
Walk the historic lobby (free), then the beach in front — flat white sand, the most photographed beach hotel in California.
Gaslamp Quarter
16-block historic downtown, the original 1880s commercial district, now the city's main restaurant + nightlife zone.
Old Town San Diego SHP
Free-admission state park preserving the original 1820s–1870s Mexican / early American pueblo — Cosmopolitan Hotel, Casa de Estudillo, and the first Wells Fargo office.
Group + van tips
Driving a 12-15 passenger van to San Diego
- From OC, leave before 7 AM to clear Camp Pendleton — the southbound I-5 backups through the base are routine after 8 AM weekdays and from midday on summer weekends.
- Balboa Park has multiple free surface lots — Inspiration Point, Federal Building lot, and the Organ Pavilion lot all fit a 15-passenger van.
- San Diego Zoo parking is free in a flat lot — accepts any van size, no clearance issues.
- Downtown / Gaslamp parking is metered and tight — the Horton Plaza garage and the Park Blvd garage near the convention center both fit standard Sprinters.
- La Jolla street parking is brutal in summer — use the Coast Walk Trail lot or the La Jolla Cove Suites valet, or park up at Mt. Soledad and walk down.
Balboa Park and the Zoo are free flat lots — easiest van parking of the day. Downtown / Gaslamp use Horton Plaza or Park Blvd garages.
When to go
Best time to visit
San Diego is famously mild year-round — March through May and September through November have the lowest crowds AND the best weather. May / June gloom (marine layer) can keep coastal mornings overcast. Comic-Con (mid-July) takes over downtown — skip that week unless you have badges. Whale-watching season (gray whales) is mid-December through April off Point Loma.
Need a van for the trip?
Our OC fleet of 12-15 passenger Sprinters and Ford Transits delivers to John Wayne (SNA), Long Beach (LGB), and any Anaheim, Newport, or Laguna hotel door.

San Diego FAQ
How long is the drive from Orange County to San Diego?
About 90 miles and 1 hour 40 minutes from central OC with no traffic. Plan 2.5+ hours through Camp Pendleton on summer weekends or weekday afternoons.
Is the San Diego Zoo or the Safari Park better?
The Zoo (Balboa Park) is more compact, has the pandas, and is the classic. The Safari Park (Escondido, 35 mi north) is open-range African / Asian habitats with caravan safaris — more time commitment, no pandas. First-time visitors usually do the Zoo.
Where do I park a 15-passenger van in Balboa Park?
Inspiration Point lot (free, easy bus shuttle to the museums) and the Organ Pavilion lot both fit a Sprinter / Transit with no clearance issues. The Zoo's own lot is also free and accepts every van size.
Can I visit Mexico from San Diego?
Yes — Tijuana is a 20-minute drive south of downtown via I-5. Crossing back requires passports for everyone and SENTRI/Global Entry speeds things up. Most U.S. rental fleets do NOT allow crossing into Mexico — confirm with the rental company before you go.
