About Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach is the OC coast at its prettiest — seven miles of cove beaches, headlands, and tide pools wedged between Crystal Cove State Park and Aliso Beach, plus a historic art-colony downtown that's been hosting the Pageant of the Masters since 1933. It's about 22 miles / 35 minutes from central OC via Laguna Canyon Road. A 12–15 passenger van is the easiest way to do the cove-hopping loop (Main Beach → Heisler Park → Crescent Bay → Treasure Island → Thousand Steps) because downtown parking is brutal in summer — drop the group at Main Beach, then either circle back or park up at the Act V lot and ride the free Laguna Beach Trolley back.

Why it's worth the drive

Things to do

What groups actually do at Laguna Beach

Cove-hop on foot

Park once and walk the cliffside path from Main Beach through Heisler Park to Crescent Bay — about 1 mile each way with constant ocean overlooks.

Tide pools at Crystal Cove

Reef Point and Pelican Point have the most accessible tide pools — go at low tide (check NOAA tide chart) for sea stars, anemones, and shore crabs.

Thousand Steps Beach

South Laguna's hidden beach — actually 218 steps down a steep concrete staircase from Pacific Coast Highway, with sea caves at low tide.

Festival of Arts + Pageant of the Masters

Summer arts festival on Laguna Canyon Rd — the Pageant of the Masters is the signature nighttime show, separate ticket, runs July–August.

Top of the World viewpoint

Hilltop neighborhood overlook (Alta Laguna Park) — the best panoramic view of Laguna and Catalina Island, especially at sunset.

Laguna Art Museum

California's oldest art museum, focused on California artists — across PCH from Main Beach.

Group + van tips

Driving a 12-15 passenger van to Laguna Beach

  • Downtown Laguna parking is metered, 2-hour max, and full by 10 AM in summer — plan to park once.
  • The Act V parking lot (1900 Laguna Canyon Rd) is the official off-site lot — $10 weekdays / $15 weekends with free Laguna Beach Trolley to downtown and 13 trolley stops along PCH (summer + weekends year-round).
  • Main Beach Cove garage and the Glenneyre garage fit standard Sprinters and Transits — both fill by mid-morning summer weekends.
  • Crystal Cove State Park parking ($15) fills early too — arrive before 10 AM or after 3 PM.

For a 15-passenger van in summer, the Act V lot + trolley is the only stress-free option. Outside summer, the Glenneyre garage works.

When to go

Best time to visit

May, June, September, and October are the sweet spots — warm, clear, and crowds well under summer peak. June Gloom (mid-May to mid-July marine layer) can keep mornings overcast — afternoons usually clear. December–March is the best tide-pooling window (lowest daytime tides). Pageant of the Masters tickets must be booked months in advance.

Need a van for the trip?

Our OC fleet of 12-15 passenger Sprinters and Ford Transits delivers to John Wayne (SNA), Long Beach (LGB), and any Anaheim, Newport, or Laguna hotel door.

Laguna Beach FAQ

Where do I park a 15-passenger van in Laguna Beach?

In summer, use the Act V lot on Laguna Canyon Road and ride the free trolley downtown — it's the only stress-free option for a Sprinter. Off-season, the Glenneyre garage downtown works.

Is the Laguna Beach Trolley really free?

Yes — the Laguna Beach Trolley is fare-free, runs daily in summer and weekends + holidays the rest of the year, and connects the Act V lot, downtown, and 13 stops along Pacific Coast Highway.

When are the Laguna tide pools best?

Winter (December–March) has the lowest daytime tides — best for sea stars and anemones. Check the NOAA La Jolla tide chart, target the lowest tide of the day, and stay on rocks, not on the animals.

Do I need tickets in advance for the Pageant of the Masters?

Yes — the Pageant runs nightly July through August and most performances sell out months ahead. Festival of Arts daytime admission is much easier to walk up.
