About Leavenworth
Leavenworth is a Bavarian-themed alpine village 120 miles northeast of Seattle, tucked into the east slope of the Cascades where the Wenatchee River exits Tumwater Canyon. The town reinvented itself in the mid-1960s after the Great Northern Railway rerouted away and the logging industry collapsed — civic leaders re-skinned every building in town in Bavarian alpine style, and 60 years later the result is a fully committed themed downtown that draws 2+ million visitors a year. Headline experiences: the Christkindlmarkt and Village of Lights from late November through February (4 million Christmas lights on every building), Maifest in May, Oktoberfest in October, and year-round access to the Icicle Creek climbing crags, the Enchantments wilderness (the most-coveted backpacking permit in the Pacific Northwest), and class III–IV whitewater rafting on the Wenatchee River. A 12–15 passenger van is the right tool for a group day trip — Stevens Pass on US-2 has the easier-to-drive grade vs Snoqualmie Pass detour.
Why it's worth the drive
- Village of Lights / Christmas in Leavenworth — 4 million lights from late November through February, the largest small-town Christmas display in the Pacific Northwest.
- Oktoberfest weekends in October — one of the largest Oktoberfest events on the West Coast.
- Icicle Creek rock-climbing — sport and trad routes within 10 min of downtown; Castle Rock and Mountaineer's Dome are the headline crags.
- Whitewater rafting the Wenatchee River — class III with a class IV section (Drunkard's Drop) in May–July high water; commercial outfitters run half-day trips.
- The Bavarian downtown — Front Street, the Nutcracker Museum, the Cheesemonger's Shop, Munchen Haus sausage garden, and the year-round Christmas store.

Oktoberfest weekends
Three weekends in October — Munchen Haus and the festival tent stay open late, live polka, and the Front Street keg-tapping ceremony. Tickets required for the festival grounds.
Bavarian food crawl
Munchen Haus (sausage garden), Andreas Keller (rotisserie chicken and schnitzel), Mozart's (white-tablecloth Bavarian), and the Cheesemonger's Shop for raclette and pretzels.
Group + van tips
Driving a 12-15 passenger van to Leavenworth
- US-2 over Stevens Pass is the standard route — 4,061 ft summit, fully paved, and pass-friendly for a Sprinter. From November through April, WSDOT may require tire chains over the summit when storms hit; check WSDOT pass reports the morning of.
- Avalanche control or storms close US-2 over Stevens Pass occasionally in winter — have I-90 (Snoqualmie Pass to Cle Elum, then US-97 to Leavenworth) as backup. The detour adds 60 min.
- Free public lots are on 9th St and 8th St behind Front Street. 15-passenger Sprinters fit standard spaces. Front Street paid parking is short-term metered.
- On Oktoberfest weekends and Christmas-light weekends, arrive before 11 AM or expect to park 4–6 blocks out and walk in.
- Cell service is solid in town but spotty in Tumwater Canyon and the Icicle Creek drainage — download offline maps.
Free public lots on 8th and 9th Streets behind Front Street accept 15-passenger Sprinters. Front Street meters are short-term only.
