Seattle van rental FAQ
Questions, answered
Do I need a special license to drive a 15-passenger van?
No. A standard, valid driver's license is all you need to rent and drive our 12 and 15-passenger vans in Seattle — no CDL or commercial endorsement is required for personal or non-commercial group travel. Just drive it like the large vehicle it is: allow extra braking distance, take turns wide, and avoid sudden lane changes.
How old do you have to be to rent one?
Renters must be 21 or older with a valid driver's license and a credit or debit card in their name. Drivers under 25 may be subject to a young-driver surcharge, and your exact age is collected at checkout so pricing and eligibility are accurate before you pay.
Does a 15-passenger van actually seat 15 people?
Yes — a 15-passenger van has 15 belted seats including the driver, so it carries 14 passengers plus one driver. That said, 15 adults with luggage is tight. Most groups are more comfortable planning 12-13 people in a 15-passenger van, or stepping up to a high-roof Sprinter for extra shoulder and legroom.
How much luggage fits with 15 passengers?
With all rows in use you can generally count on roughly 4-6 carry-on-sized bags behind the last row in a standard 15-passenger van. Extended-body and high-roof Sprinters hold noticeably more — often 8-12 bags. If everyone is checking a large suitcase, plan on 12 or fewer passengers, or add a second van.
Can I remove seats to make more room for luggage?
Seats may not be removed or modified by renters — the seats and belts are part of the vehicle's certified safety system. If you need cargo room, choose a van configured with fewer rows (for example a 10 or 12-passenger layout) or a high-roof cargo-style Sprinter. Tell us your bag count and we'll match the right configuration.
What insurance do I need?
You need liability coverage plus protection for damage to the van itself. Liability is never included with the rental, but it can be purchased at checkout, along with collision/damage protection (CDW/LDW). Alternatively, you may show a qualifying personal auto or commercial policy that extends to a 15-passenger rental van.
Does my personal auto insurance cover the rental?
Sometimes — but many personal policies exclude vehicles with more than 8 or 9 passenger seats, which means a 12 or 15-passenger van may not be covered. Call your agent and ask specifically about a 15-passenger van rental. If they will not confirm it in writing, purchase coverage from us at checkout.
Does my credit card provide rental-car coverage for a 15-passenger van?
Usually not. Most credit-card rental benefits explicitly exclude vans that seat more than 8 or 9 people, along with trucks and large commercial vehicles. Verify the exclusion list with your card issuer before you decline coverage — most 12 and 15-passenger renters end up buying protection at checkout.
Is there a security deposit? How much is it?
Yes. A refundable security deposit is authorized on your card at pickup, typically in the $300-$500 range depending on the van, rental length, and coverage you select. It is released back to your card after the van is returned undamaged, fueled, and on time.
Is there a mileage limit?
Every rental includes a mileage allowance, and you tell us the miles you expect to drive during checkout so the total is priced up front. Miles driven beyond your selected package are billed at a clearly shown per-mile rate, so there are no surprises at return.
Can I get unlimited mileage?
Unlimited mileage is not offered on every van or every date, but larger mileage packages are always available at checkout — and for long road trips they are usually cheaper than paying per mile. Enter your estimated miles when you book, or call us and we'll build the best package for your route.
