About Philadelphia
Philadelphia is the closest major historic city to New York — about 95 miles south on the New Jersey Turnpike, typically 2 to 2.5 hours by van. The Independence National Historical Park concentrates Independence Hall (where the Declaration was signed), the Liberty Bell, and Carpenter's Hall in a 6-block grid. From there it's a 15-minute drive to the Philadelphia Museum of Art's 'Rocky steps' and the Barnes Foundation. With a 12–15 passenger van you can leave NYC after breakfast, do the Liberty Bell, eat cheesesteaks at Pat's or Geno's, run the Art Museum steps, and be back in Manhattan by bedtime.
Why it's worth the trip
- Independence National Historical Park — Independence Hall (UNESCO) and the Liberty Bell, both free, sit one block apart.
- Philadelphia Museum of Art — top-10 U.S. art museum, with the 72 stone 'Rocky steps' out front.
- Reading Terminal Market — 1893 indoor public market with Amish stalls, cheesesteaks, roast pork, and Philly's best lunch lineup under one roof.
- The Barnes Foundation, the Eastern State Penitentiary (Al Capone's cell), and the Mütter Museum are all major attractions within a short drive.
Things to do
What groups actually do at Philadelphia
Liberty Bell Center
Free; timed entry available online. The bell sits in a glass pavilion with the bell's casting history and civil-rights symbolism exhibits.
Independence Hall (NPS)
Free tour, but you NEED a timed ticket (reserve at recreation.gov) from March through December.
Reading Terminal Market
Open 8 AM – 6 PM — DiNic's roast pork sandwich is the local pick over the tourist cheesesteak debate.
Philadelphia Museum of Art + Rocky steps
72 steps, the bronze Rocky statue, and one of the most comprehensive U.S. art collections.
Eastern State Penitentiary
1829 abandoned prison museum — Al Capone's cell, Death Row tour, and a famously good Halloween haunted attraction in October.
Pat's vs. Geno's
Cheesesteak rivals on opposite corners of 9th & Passyunk — both open very late.
Group + van tips
Driving a 12-15 passenger van to Philadelphia
- I-95 between Newark and Philly is reliably congested 7–10 AM and 3–7 PM — leave NYC by 6 AM or after 10 AM to avoid the worst of it.
- Center City garages on 8th & Filbert (next to Reading Terminal Market) and the Philadelphia Museum of Art's North Garage both accept Sprinter / Transit-height vans.
- Walk Independence Mall — Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the National Constitution Center, and the Museum of the American Revolution are all within a 6-block square.
- Don't drive south on I-95 from Philly toward Wilmington at rush hour — back to NYC, take the NJ Turnpike north for faster travel.
Center City public garages (8th & Filbert, AutoPark at Independence Mall, the Art Museum North Garage) all fit 12-15 passenger vans in standard rows.
When to go
Best time to visit
April–June and September–October for ideal walking weather. July 4 is the city's biggest holiday (parades, Wawa Welcome America fireworks) but expect closures around Independence Mall. December's Christmas Village in LOVE Park is a charming evening add-on.
