About Central Park
Central Park is an 843-acre urban park stretching from 59th to 110th Street between Fifth and Eighth Avenues, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux and opened to the public in 1858. It's the most-filmed location in the world and welcomes ~42 million visitors a year. Every direction from Midtown puts you within walking distance of a park entrance, but for groups bringing strollers, picnic gear, or grandparents, a 12–15 passenger van delivered to Central Park South or to a Museum Mile entrance saves the cross-town commute.
Why it's worth the trip
- 843 acres of meadow, woodland, lakes, and ballfields — the only place in Manhattan you can lose phone signal for a reason that's not the subway.
- Iconic film locations: Bethesda Terrace, the Bow Bridge, Wollman Rink, the Mall and Literary Walk.
- Borders Museum Mile on the east side — the Met, Guggenheim, Cooper Hewitt, El Museo del Barrio, all within 2 blocks.
- Free, open 6 AM – 1 AM daily, with dozens of ranger-led tours and free summer events (SummerStage, Shakespeare in the Park).

Group + van tips
Driving a 12-15 passenger van to Central Park
- The transverse roads (65th, 79th, 86th, 97th) cross under the park and are open 24/7 — useful for crosstown van transport.
- Central Park Drive (the loop) is closed to cars except for transverse cut-throughs — don't try to drive around the park inside it.
- Drop-off / pickup zones are at Columbus Circle (SW corner), Grand Army Plaza (SE corner), and the Met steps on 5th Ave at 82nd St.
- Closest garages: Icon Central Park West at 65th, MPG Parking 36 W 65th, and the Lincoln Center garages.
Garages along Central Park West (65th, 70th) and along 5th Ave (60s–70s) accept standard Sprinter / Transit heights — call ahead for high-roof clearance.
When to go

Central Park FAQ
Is Central Park really safe?
Yes — Central Park has a dedicated NYPD precinct (Central Park Precinct, 22nd) and is heavily patrolled. The interior loop closes to cars but stays open and busy until at least 11 PM in summer.
Can I drive INTO Central Park?
No private vehicles on the inner loop (Central Park Drive). The four numbered transverse roads (65, 79, 86, 97) cross the park east-west and ARE open to traffic 24/7.
Where's the best entrance for a 15-passenger van drop-off?
Columbus Circle (59th & 8th — SW corner) and Grand Army Plaza (59th & 5th — SE corner) both have wide pull-over zones. The Met steps on 5th Ave at 82nd St also work well.
How long do you need at Central Park?
A first-time loop with Bethesda Terrace, Bow Bridge, Strawberry Fields, and the Mall takes 2–3 hours. Add 90 min for the zoo or 3 hours for the Met next door.
