About National Mall
The National Mall is a 2-mile National Park Service unit running due west from the U.S. Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, stitching together the Washington Monument, the WWII Memorial, the Reflecting Pool, the Korean War and Vietnam Veterans Memorials, and the Tidal Basin loop (Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial). It anchors the Smithsonian's eleven Mall-side museums on both flanks. End-to-end is more than a 4-mile walk with stops — far more than most groups expect. For a 12–15 passenger van, the play is a drop-and-shuttle: drop the group at the Lincoln Memorial end, drive the van to a Smithsonian-adjacent garage or to L'Enfant Plaza, and re-collect later at a planned spot. Everything on the Mall itself is free.
Why it's worth the drive
- The Lincoln Memorial — 99 marble steps to Daniel Chester French's 19-ft seated Lincoln; the Gettysburg Address engraved inside.
- Washington Monument — 555 ft, the world's tallest stone structure; free timed tickets to the observation deck via recreation.gov.
- Vietnam Veterans Memorial — Maya Lin's black-granite wall with 58,000+ names; the most-visited memorial in the country.
- WWII Memorial — the Atlantic and Pacific pavilions around the rainbow pool, between the Washington Monument and the Reflecting Pool.
- Tidal Basin loop — Jefferson, FDR, and MLK Memorials; the cherry-blossom epicenter the last weeks of March.

Group + van tips
Driving a 12-15 passenger van to National Mall
- There is effectively no street parking around the Mall itself — Constitution Ave and Independence Ave have permit-only and very limited oversize zones.
- Best van play: drop-off at the Lincoln Memorial circle (use the Henry Bacon Dr loop), then park the van at L'Enfant Plaza garage, Union Station, or the Ronald Reagan Building (the closest oversize-friendly Mall-side options).
- Avoid driving onto Constitution Ave or 17th St during the Cherry Blossom Festival (last 10 days of March) — closures and roving traffic control will block a 15-passenger van.
- Carry IDs and minimize bags for Smithsonian / Capitol screening; large backpacks are inspected and sometimes denied.
There's no on-Mall parking for a 15-passenger van. Use L'Enfant Plaza, Union Station, or the Ronald Reagan Building garages and walk in.
When to go
