Cross-Border Van Rentals
12 & 15 Passenger Van Rentals Into Canada
Our 12 and 15 passenger vans are approved for travel into Canada with advance notice. Every Canada trip requires proof of your own personal auto insurance that extends to Canada.
My Van Rentals regularly sets up 12 and 15 passenger vans, Mercedes Sprinters, and Ford Transits for trips into Canada — church and school groups heading to Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal or Banff, families driving to Niagara Falls, and work crews crossing at Blaine, Detroit, or Buffalo.
Canada trips work differently than Mexico trips. Canada recognizes U.S. auto insurance, so you don't buy a separate country policy. Instead, you must show us proof that you carry your own personal auto liability insurance and that your policy extends to Canada before we release the van for cross-border travel.
That means uploading or emailing your declarations page (or a Canada Non-Resident Inter-Provincial Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card, often called a 'yellow card', if your insurer issues one) showing your name, policy number, liability limits, and effective dates. Coverage must be active for the full length of your rental.
Proof of personal auto insurance is required
Before a Canada-approved van leaves our lot, we need documented proof that you carry personal auto liability insurance that covers you while driving a rented vehicle in Canada. Confirm this with your insurer — most U.S. personal policies extend into Canada, but limits and physical damage coverage vary by carrier.
Acceptable proof is your insurance declarations page or ID card showing your name, the policy number, liability limits, and the policy period, plus written confirmation from your insurer that coverage applies in Canada. A 'yellow card' from your carrier is the cleanest form of proof at the border.
Liability coverage is never included with any of our rentals. If you don't carry a personal auto policy, we can't approve a Canada trip — the optional coverage we sell is a domestic product and shouldn't be relied on as your Canadian liability proof.
Bring the paperwork with you. Canadian border officers and, in the event of an incident, provincial police can ask for both your insurance proof and our written authorization letter for the vehicle.

How a Canada van rental works
Reserve your van
Choose your pickup city, dates, and either a 12 or 15 passenger van, and note that your trip includes Canada so we can flag it for cross-border approval.
Send your insurance proof
Email or upload your declarations page or insurance ID card showing liability limits and Canadian coverage. We review it before pickup day.
Get your authorization letter
We issue a signed letter with the VIN, plate, and travel window confirming you have permission to take the van into Canada. Keep it in the glovebox.
Pick up and cross
Collect the van (delivery is available for a fee in most metros), have passports and paperwork ready at the crossing, and enjoy the trip with 24/7 support.
Canada van rental FAQs
Can I take a 15 passenger van rental into Canada?
Yes, with advance written approval from us and proof of your own personal auto insurance that extends to Canada. Tell us at booking so we can prepare your authorization letter.
What insurance do I need to drive a rental van into Canada?
You must provide proof of personal auto liability insurance that applies in Canada. Your declarations page or a Canada Non-Resident Inter-Provincial Insurance Card ('yellow card') is the documentation we accept.
Do I have to buy a separate Canadian policy like in Mexico?
No. Canada recognizes U.S. auto insurance, so there's no country-specific policy to purchase — but you must document your own coverage. Mexico is different and requires a Mexican-issued policy of about $50/day.
Is liability coverage included with the rental?
No. Liability is never included with any of our rentals. For Canada trips, your personal auto policy is what satisfies the requirement, which is why proof of it is mandatory.
What documents do we need at the border?
A passport, passport card, NEXUS card, or enhanced driver's license for every occupant, our vehicle authorization letter, your rental agreement, and your insurance proof.
How many miles do we get for a Canada road trip?
Each rental includes a set mileage allowance with additional miles billed per mile. Share your route and we'll quote a package that covers the full trip.
Which pickup cities work best for Canada trips?
Seattle, Minneapolis, and New York City are the most common launch points, but any of our metros can be set up with a Canada-approved van.
