About Chattanooga
Chattanooga sits 120 miles north of Atlanta on the Tennessee River, just over the state line — a clean 2-hour straight shot up I-75. It's anchored by the Tennessee Aquarium (two buildings on the riverfront, one freshwater one saltwater), the Walnut Street Bridge (a 2,376-ft pedestrian-only converted truss bridge over the Tennessee), and Lookout Mountain right above downtown with three of the South's most-visited tourist attractions clustered together: Ruby Falls (an underground waterfall), Rock City (the 'See Rock City' barn-roof landmark with the Lover's Leap overlook), and the Incline Railway (the world's steepest passenger railway). Add the Hunter Museum of American Art, the Songbirds guitar museum, and the Bluff View Art District and a Chattanooga day trip from Atlanta easily fills a full Saturday. A 12–15 passenger van handles all of it; downtown has plenty of oversize-friendly garages.
Why it's worth the drive
- Tennessee Aquarium — two-building riverfront aquarium, one freshwater (Appalachian rivers, sturgeon) and one saltwater (sharks, penguins, jellies).
- Walnut Street Bridge — 2,376-ft former truss bridge converted to one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world; free, the iconic Chattanooga photo.
- Lookout Mountain trio — Ruby Falls (underground waterfall), Rock City (the 'See Rock City' overlook), and the Incline Railway (the steepest passenger railway in the world).
- Hunter Museum of American Art — riverside museum with a major American collection in a 1904 mansion + 2005 contemporary wing.
- Bluff View Art District — three-block historic district with the Hunter, Houston Museum, and the Back Inn Café perched on the Tennessee River cliffs.
Things to do
What groups actually do at Chattanooga
Tennessee Aquarium (both buildings)
River Journey building covers Appalachian freshwater (sturgeon, river otters); Ocean Journey covers saltwater (sharks, penguins, jellies). One ticket covers both; plan 3+ hours.
Walk the Walnut Street Bridge
2,376 ft, pedestrian-only, free, links downtown with the North Shore. Sunset is the postcard photo. Connects directly to Coolidge Park on the north end.
Ruby Falls
260-ft underground waterfall reached by a 1,120-ft elevator inside Lookout Mountain — the only underground waterfall publicly accessible in the U.S. Guided tour; book a timed ticket.
Rock City Gardens
On top of Lookout Mountain — the famous 'See Rock City' barn-roof brand. Lover's Leap overlook claims a 7-state view on clear days; family-friendly garden paths.
Lookout Mountain Incline Railway
The 'world's steepest passenger railway' — 72.7% grade on the upper section. 1-mile ride to the top at Point Park Overlook.
Hunter Museum of American Art
Major American collection from colonial through contemporary, on a Tennessee River bluff in the Bluff View Art District. Free first Sundays.
Group + van tips
Driving a 12-15 passenger van to Chattanooga
- Drive: I-75 N from Atlanta to Chattanooga — 120 mi, ~2 hr in clear traffic. Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings add 30–60 min near Cartersville and Calhoun.
- Downtown parking: the Aquarium garage (Chestnut St) and the Hamilton County Courts garage both fit 15-passenger Sprinters; flat-rate weekend pricing.
- Lookout Mountain attractions are 6 miles south of downtown on Lookout Mountain Pkwy — separate paid parking at each. Rock City and Ruby Falls lots fit a Sprinter; Incline Railway lower-station lot is tight, use the upper-station lot at Point Park.
- Combo tickets: Rock City + Ruby Falls + Incline Railway are sold as a bundle. Saves vs paying separately if you're doing two or three.
- Eastern Time — Chattanooga is on Eastern just like Atlanta, no time-zone change despite being in Tennessee.
Aquarium garage on Chestnut St and the Hamilton County Courts garage both fit a 15-passenger Sprinter. Lookout Mountain has separate paid lots per attraction.
When to go

April–June and September–October for the best weather. Summer riverfront is humid but the Aquarium is fully indoor; Lookout Mountain stays 5–10°F cooler than downtown. October for fall color on the Cumberland Plateau. Avoid Memorial Day weekend on US-27 / Lookout Mountain — traffic peaks.
